NEWS (July 2013): Two new EFOY Pro models are now available in stock (800D and 2400D) in addition to the original models (600, 1600, 2200). These are also retrofittable into our standard Power Pod enclosures. We have tested an early prototype since March, and are impressed with the performance and new features. Dual integrated fuel hoses allow 2 fuel cartridges to be directly connected (without DCS unit), longevity improvements, and also the controller user interface is much improved. As authorized distribution partner of SFC Energy since 2009, Evergreen is pleased to represent the EFOY PRO series of Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs).

SFC Energy of Brunnthal, Germany is the world's leading manufacturer of DMFC units (over 20,000 units sold since 2002). Originally marketed for remote sensing, military, and consumer (recreational vehicle) applications, SFC and Evergreen have joined forces to adapt this technology for use at remote sites in Canada.

The EFOY Pro fuel cell has a nominal output of 12/24VDC at 600, 800, 1600, 2200 and 2400 Wh/d (watt hours per day) maximum, depending on the model. Larger outputs are also possible by using multiple units. Some models have dual fuel hoses built-in, but all models can use the optional Duocartswitch device to connect two fuel cartridges.

The EFOY Pro monitors the state of charge of the batteries in standby mode, until the voltage drops to a critical level at which point the EFOY Pro

starts charging, converting liquid methanol from the fuel cartridge into electricity to re-charge the batteries. This might happen, for example, when the solar panels are not receiving enough sunlight to keep up with the load.

Approximately 1100 watt-hours per litre of methanol fuel is delivered to the batteries by the EFOY Pro. With the DCS device and (2) 28L fuel cartridges, this means over 61,000 watt-hours of backup energy is available on-demand, prior to re-fueling.

The EFOY Pro combines hydrogen from the methanol and oxygen from the air in a flameless, electrochemical reaction (NOT COMBUSTION) that is very clean and safe: the exhaust contains only water vapor plus a small amount of CO2 (probably less than you are breathing out right now). This process is automatically controlled by an on-board computer for efficient operation.

Developed through R&D efforts since 2008, Evergreen's Power Pod system integrates the latest EFOY PRO industrial-grade fuel cell into a stand-alone, fully-automatic, hybrid DMFC-solar DC power supply unit capable of operation down to -40C for year-round reliability. The additional systems included in the Power Pod are necessary to allow the EFOY Pro to operate in locations where a heated, non-hazardous-area building is not available.
